How to Choose the Right Parqueting Adhesive for Wood Flooring

Why the adhesive matters

The adhesive is the bond between your hardwood and the subfloor, so choosing the right parqueting adhesive is one of the most important steps in any wood flooring project. A good adhesive locks planks in place, reduces movement and helps the floor last for decades.

What to look for

  • Subfloor type: Confirm whether you are bonding onto concrete, screed or a wooden base, because each surface has different moisture and preparation requirements.
  • Moisture: For concrete or screed, check the moisture levels first. High moisture calls for a suitable moisture-barrier and an adhesive designed for damp slabs.
  • Application method: Some adhesives are trowel-applied, others come in cartridges. Trowel-applied types are common for full-surface bonding on larger areas.
  • Curing time: Check how long the adhesive takes to reach full strength and plan your installation before walking on or loading the floor.

Broad vs perimeter bonding

For larger or high-traffic areas, full-surface (broad) bonding is usually preferred because it maximises stability and reduces the chance of hollow spots. Perimeter or spot bonding can be appropriate for some engineered boards, but the manufacturer recommendations should always guide the final choice.

Getting it right first time

Prepare the subfloor so it is clean, level and dry. Apply the adhesive evenly, lay the boards within the open time, and use the correct spacing for the product you have chosen. If you are unsure about a specific surface or pack size, ask the supplier before starting.
